Why I do what I do

Much before I completed my Bachelors in Design from NIFT, Chennai, I had decided that I won’t be sitting for the campus placements. It was a decision that was hard for me to make because I had been a good student and my grades were all up. I knew if I tried hard, I would get one of the jobs for sure! But I decided not to.

My dad had been in a similar industry for many years and even though he was no longer a part of the industry, he had definitely built up an amazing list of contacts over the years. I chose to take a risk and try for a job that I knew would truly test my potentials and help me be the designer I want to be. I didn’t want to take any job that was not going to make me 100% happy every single day.

After I completed my course, I received an award for the Best Graduation Project! I was thrilled! That would now be what would give my resume an edge that it needed! I took a few months off and started applying to companies all over the world! It was all a very long shot but I kept the faith. Each time I received a reply it always said that they “have no openings at the moment” and would “get back to me as soon as something opened up”.

Needless to say, that didn’t happen! That’s when the light bulb moment happened and I decided to start up on my own. I always knew I wanted to start my own brand, and there’s no time like the present, right?? People always say that it’s always good to have experience before you start up, and I guess experience does help! You definitely learn a lot when you’re working with someone.

But sometimes you’ve got to take that risk! And you’re going to learn either way!! The amount I’ve learned ever since I started my own business has been insane! I know things and do things that I never imagined I’d know! It’s scary and it can be a roller coaster ride but as long as you’re happy with what you’re doing, you’re going to do all you can to make it work.
